I live in Japan, and the question I get most from friends flying in is the same every time: “What do I do about internet the second I land?” An eSIM is the answer for almost everyone β no plastic SIM to swap, no queue at the airport, and it’s working before you’ve even reached baggage claim.
Full disclosure: I don’t use a tourist eSIM myself β as a resident I’m on a local carrier plan. Do you even need an eSIM in Japan?
Short answer: yes, if your phone supports eSIM (every iPhone from XS onward and most recent Android flagships do). Free Wi-Fi in Japan is patchy and often needs a clunky sign-in, and you’ll want live maps, train apps, translation and QR-code payments the moment you arrive. An eSIM gives you data from touchdown.

What actually matters when choosing
- Network β Japan runs on three carriers. NTT Docomo has the widest reach, especially in Hokkaido, the Japan Alps and Shikoku. If you’re leaving the big cities, Docomo-based plans (Ubigi, Sakura Mobile) matter.
- 4G vs 5G β Airalo now offers 5G in Japan too (alongside 4G), so this matters less as a differentiator than it used to β Japanese LTE was already fast and stable enough for maps, streaming and video calls.
- Data cap style β “Unlimited” isn’t always unlimited. Some providers throttle after a daily allowance; check whether you want truly uncapped (Holafly) or are fine with a generous GB bucket.

How to set up your Japan eSIM (do this before you fly)
The number-one mistake I see: buying the eSIM after landing, on airport Wi-Fi, while jet-lagged. Do it at home instead.
- Buy 1β2 days before departure and install the eSIM while you still have your home internet.
- Install, but don’t activate β most plans let you install the profile and start the clock only when you choose. Activate when you land (or set it to auto-start on arrival).
- Keep your home SIM for calls/texts: label the Japan eSIM as your data line and turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM only. Your primary number stays reachable without racking up roaming charges.
- Turn on the eSIM as the plane lands β you’ll have data before you’re off the jet bridge.

Does my phone support eSIM?
Every iPhone from XS (2018) onward, and most recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy flagships. Check Settings β About β look for “EID”. Note: some phones sold in Japan and a few regions are eSIM-locked or region-restricted β confirm yours is carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I actually need?
For a 7-day trip using maps, messaging and some social media, 10β20 GB is plenty for most people. Add more if you stream video daily or tether a laptop.
Can I make calls?
These are data plans. Use WhatsApp, LINE, FaceTime or similar over data. For a real Japanese phone number, Sakura Mobile offers voice options.
Will it work in rural areas / Hokkaido?
